women and photography 2021

To commemorate International Women’s Day on March 8, the Kumanovo Photo Club, in collaboration with the ‘Trajko Prokopiev’ Culture Center, organized the national exhibition of artistic photographs titled ‘Women and Photography.’

Photo Club Kumanovo creatively celebrates the engaged presence of women in the world of photography, turning it into a tradition. This marks the eighth edition of the exhibition, showcasing 50 photographs from the talented female photography scene in the Republic of Macedonia.

International Women’s Day serves as a poignant reminder to pause, reflect, and celebrate the remarkable progress of women throughout history. It testifies to the bravery and dignity of women who have tirelessly struggled to secure a better position for women in all spheres of society. Their efforts aim to free society from the constraints of gender inequality, fostering a world open to change and new challenges. Women are spearheading a real revolution in our understanding of the world, breaking down barriers and fostering the acceptance of new opinions and the establishment of new paradigms.

Whether as individuals or united in organizations, women have long been at the forefront of the fight for equality of opportunities and, equally importantly, equality of results. Historical sources reveal that by 1900, over 7,000 women had embraced photography as a profession worldwide. This marked a significant milestone, considering the societal norms of the time, where it was uncommon for women to pursue a profession. Women, constituting nearly 20 percent of the profession, demonstrated resilience and determination in breaking barriers and challenging societal expectations.

The Kumanovo Photo Club boasts a significant number of female photographers, a clear indicator of the growing and active participation of women in this creative pursuit.

Women have always been integral to the world of photography, serving as muses and inspiration, while also emerging as artists and authors who wield the power to influence and inspire through their photographs.

As a dynamic and powerful medium of expression, photography leaves an indelible mark on the times we live in, bearing witness to the success of women in shaping a more beautiful and humane world. Exploring new stylistic directions, the authors capture their visions of a world fraught with challenges. The exhibition features two themes: the first centers on women—their appearance and roles—presented in an organized visual form that demands attention. The second theme, a free topic, serves as a canvas for the interpretation of the world around us, seen through the lens of women authors.

Personal experiences of reality and the nuances of everyday life find expression through a variety of stylistic approaches, all with a shared goal rooted in the aesthetic and emotional foundations of their creation. The photographers convey their perspectives in a genre that aligns most closely with their sensibilities.

The diversity, contemporaneity, and authenticity of their artistic conceptions and interpretations, coupled with a high degree of aesthetic awareness, establish these photographers as equal members in this creative endeavor.

Through an analysis of the content, including the motive and complete form, one can draw associations with the spirit, character, and personal culture of the photographer, and even discern aspects related to the gender of the author.

Due to a diversity in perception, subtlety, an innate sense of care, and emotionality unique to female photographers, the author successfully creates an entire world of experiences, memories, moments, and intersections of reality, firmly rooted in its sense of belonging.

Photographs become active participants in the lives of future generations, serving as objects of visual, emotional, and intellectual experiences for those who view them. They continue to radiate the message and expressive energy imprinted by their authors. The exhibition’s purpose is to provide encouragement and support, fostering a continuation of creative activity. As the Photo Club, we aim to celebrate women as influential creators in the realm of photography.
